Kaplan y Robin Cooper son considerados los creadores del Costeo basado en actividades, ellos proponen en su libro más importante “Coste y efecto” del año 1999 los basamentos de esta metodología que busca asignar valor a las actividades que la empresa realiza en la búsqueda de lucro. El ABC (Activity Based Costing) es altamente eficiente para distribuir los costos indirectos, la idea es que aquellos recursos que son indirectos respecto de los productos, puedan tener una relación de causa – efecto directa respecto de las actividades, de esa manera lo autores tienen éxito implantando este sistema en grandes empresas de servicios y manufactureras con elevados niveles de gastos indirectos.
